Cai Be, one lodge and an honest caveat
A river town on the Tien about 108 km from Saigon, with canals, orchards and family workshops around it. It has one stay we would consider at this level, and that stay needs checking before anyone books it.

What Cai Be actually is
Cai Be is the first stretch of real river country you reach from Saigon. The town itself is small and ordinary. What surrounds it is the reason to come: the Tien River, wide and brown, with islets and narrow canals running off it, orchards along the banks, and family workshops that make coconut candy, popped rice and rice wine, alongside bee farms selling honey.
Cai Be's floating market is the name most visitors know, and it is the part to be honest about. The market still exists, but it has been weakening for years, and a conservation plan from 2017 did little to stop it. A 2026 guide from a private publisher describes it as nearly gone, with a few trading boats early in the morning and then tour boats. We do not build a morning around it.
Because Cai Be is the closest of our three bases to Saigon, it is easy to visit in a day. Staying the night gives you the canals in the late afternoon and the early morning, with no long drive at either end.

The stay, and the caveat
Mekong Lodge sits on the Tien River at Dong Hoa Hiep. Its own website describes 26 private bungalows, 12 with their own pools, a restaurant, cycling, a cooking class and boat trips, and gives distances of 120 km to Saigon and 80 km to Can Tho.
That website looks out of date. Its footer is dated 2018, older content dates from 2010, and its list of rooms adds up to twice as many units as it has bungalows. We have no reason to think the lodge has closed, but we will not quote it from a website that old. Before it appears in your quote, we confirm that it is operating, which bungalow types are available, and how arrival works. If we cannot confirm, the night moves to Can Tho, about 71 km on, and we tell you.
There is no other stay at this level in the Cai Be area that we would use. The other accommodation around here is small hotels and homestays, which this site does not plan.
Mekong Lodge's details on this page come from its own website, which appears not to have been updated since about 2018. We confirm everything with the lodge before quoting.

How many nights, and why
One night, as the first stop out of Saigon on a longer route. It turns the first day into an easy two-hour drive and an afternoon by the river, and the next morning on the canals before the drive on to Can Tho. Two nights here is more than most travellers need; three nights in Can Tho or two at Chau Doc give more.
Cai Be does not suit a two-night trip on its own. With two nights, Can Tho gives you more: a choice of three stays and a floating market that still trades at dawn.
When to go
| Months | Conditions | For a Cai Be night |
|---|---|---|
| December – April | Dry season | Easiest; boats run in good conditions |
| May – August | Rains start; summer fruit such as rambutan, mangosteen and durian | Good for orchards |
| September – November | Wettest months; peak tides in October and November | Workable; afternoons often wet |

Getting there, and nearby
From Saigon: about 108 km on the expressway, two to two and a half hours. On the way, Vinh Trang pagoda in My Tho, completed in 1850, makes a good short stop, and from My Tho boats cross to Thoi Son islet.
Onward: Can Tho is about 71 km away, an hour and a half to two hours across the Tien River. Vinh Long lies just across the river from the Cai Be side, linked by the My Thuan bridge; its Confucian temple, Van Thanh Mieu, was built between 1864 and 1866.

When to skip Cai Be
- Mekong Lodge cannot be confirmed for your dates. Go straight to Can Tho.
- You want a floating market. Cai Be's has largely faded; Cai Rang at Can Tho has survived better.
- You have two nights or fewer for the whole delta. Use them in Can Tho.
Journeys that stay here
Saigon, the delta and Phu Quoc spends its first night at Cai Be, if the lodge can be confirmed. Other journeys pass by on the expressway; the comparison explains why Can Tho is usually the better first base.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is Mekong Lodge still open?
Its website appears not to have been updated since about 2018. We have no information that it has closed, and we confirm directly with the lodge before quoting it.
Is the Cai Be floating market worth seeing?
Not as a reason to go. It still exists but has faded a long way. Cai Rang at Can Tho is the better choice.
Can we do Cai Be as a day trip?
Many people do, from Saigon. This site plans stays, so we include Cai Be as a night on a longer route or a stop on the drive to Can Tho.
When is fruit season around Cai Be?
Roughly May to August for rambutan, mangosteen, durian and mango, at the start of the rains.
